Every summer the high school youth and adult sponsors go on a week long mission trip. Last year, we spent a week in New Orleans with hurricane Katrina recovery. This summer we returned to New Orleans from July 2nd - 9th. Additionally, every 3 to 4 years we take an international mission trip because we believe mission is both local and global. Whether near or far, each mission trip has been a transformative experience.

We left at 6:30am. Our first stop was McDonald’s in Nashville. Then we drove a few hours and stopped at a gas station at the top of Alabama. There we realized the air conditioning still wasn’t working on the bus. A few minutes later we stopped at a service station to get it fixed. Then we drove another few hours and stopped to eat at Popeye’s. Then we drove a little ways more and then stopped at another gas station. Then we drove the rest of the way. Then we drove the rest of the way to New Orleans. When we arrived at the church where we’re staying, we unloaded our stuff. After we had unpacked, we planned to go eat at Muffeleta’s but they were closed. Then we tried the “Tasty Buffet.” There was a tattoo shop on top called “Tattoo’s by Taz,’ but the “Tasty Buffet” was closed too. Then we ended up at Applebee’s. We came back to our bunk house when we were done eating and went to sleep at 12:00am.

Chandler Fleischmann
Well; today as the first official day of Mission Trip 2011. Kendell was awoken by pots and spoons. I really have no idea how to write this. We worked on the Westside Christian Church after a GLORIOUS worship service at Pastor Washington’s in the Lower 9th Ward. Lots of amen’s and hallelujah’s and it was “louder than a Maroon Five concert.” I’ve never been to a louder church service in my life. They do things way different here. At Westside, we de-weeded and Cori destroyed the front sign. Megan Carter injured herself, of course. We ate lunch at Pastor Washington’s; I’ve never met people that friendly and welcoming. We experienced the ferry, which was fantastic. Cori got her wish to hear someone OTHER than herself. We ate dinner here, turned on some faucets, and explored New Orleans, and explored New Orleans. This place is beautiful, and to finish the day off we are all being obnoxious and loud in the bunks.

Today was our first day of work but we only worked a half a day. We cleaned up the house so that it will be easier for us to paint tomorrow. We also did a lot of taping around the baseboards. After we worked we came back and had lunch and took showers and naps. Before we left for the French Quarter, we had vespers and discussed our God sightings. At about 5 we went to eat at Felix’s and had seafood. A man shoved a dirty napkin bird in my mouth. After we ate we split up and went shopping and walking for a while. Then we met up at 8:30 and went to watch fireworks. After we watched those we walked about 1749391673 miles to go back to the ferry. Then some man scared the heck out of Chandler when him and his friends decided to scream in her ear. It was funny. After we got on the ferry, we rode home and then Mother, Father, John, and me, and Megan went to McDonald’s and spent $2078. But Father only pays in ones. So after McDonalds, we went to Rally’s and got in trouble for taking pictures of the woman. Then we came home and got ready for day 2 of work.

Tuesday, was our first full day of work and it was definitely more than anyone of us were prepared for. I’m petty sure no one was ready to get covered in “English Cottage White” wall paint and spending hours taping up the walls. But we all knew it was worth it when we had our first actual home cooked meal. Mary Lynne and Rebecca made meatloaf and it was probably the best meal we had had. Even though Ronnie was upset we weren’t taking advantage of the New Orleans food we still ate like we had never been fed. After dinner we all decided to get closer by putting our mattresses into the “living room” and watching Slumdog Millionaire on the TV. It was a nice little sleepover but sadly it had to end early because we had another full day of work ahead of us starting at 7 in the morning. All-in-all, it was a good Tuesday in New Orleans at Westside Mission.

What a marvelous day! Today was the day we figured everything out when it comes to finishing a house. Everyone came together in realization that we could do it. We worked until Bekah yelled lunchtime and we laid down our paint brushes. With splintered fingers we managed to eat Bekah’s homemade turkey/ham sandwiches. After lunch we worked another 3 hours making great strides. We sped back to the church awaiting a fresh Cajun feast prepared by the local congregation. I personally ate 3 plates full of gumbo, green beans, potato salad, and watermelon. Not to mention the 3 chocolate cup cakes! Barely making it through vespers, I hit the bed the first chance I got. Amen.

Well now I’m pretty darn tired of painting! After painting for 3 days straight I’m ready for a break. What could be better place than a food bank, woo! After about 4 hours of painting the house we went to the food bank for about 3 hours and helped unpack food. We got it packaged up for someone less fortunate to eat. After the food bank we went back to the house and put the final touches on the house. We finally finished and had a final prayer with Pastor Washington. Can’t get any more magical than that. But now that were done with the house I’m glad I helped someone have a home.
